Documenting the Big Dig:

Sun Devil Productions partners with international scientists

to film prehistoric site in South Africa

Scottsdale, AZ – A team of internationally renowned archaeologists assembled at Mossel Bay, South Africa this summer is searching for information about the earliest behaviors of our earliest ancestors from the Middle Stone Age. Among the team will be Sun Devil Productions (SDP) filmmaker Janaki Cedanna, who is documenting the dig and, if hopes and expectations are met, will record new insights into how man lived, hunted and worked some 100,000 years ago.

The scientists are led by Curtis Marean of the Institute of Human Origins (IHO) at Arizona State University’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change. The transdiciplinary team seeks to expand our understanding of the emergence of Homo Sapiens. Dr. Marean and his co-authors announced in Nature in 2007 the earliest evidence for shellfish in the human diet, as well as very early the use of pigments.

Sun Devil Productions, a full service television and video company located at ASU SkySong, specializes in assisting nonproft, educational and scientific projects in their video production needs. The SDP filmmaker will document the dig in the famed caves along the Western Cape of South Africa, between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. He will also capture footage that will be used on IHO’s website (BecomingHuman.org), which provides comprehensive and up-to-date information on the human condition for students worldwide. Contemporary scientists will demonstrate on the website how prehistoric man first forged simple tools – hand axes, points and blades -- from stone.

SDP’s work is co-sponsored by Bogen Imaging, an international photography and video accessories distributor (including products from Manfrotto, Kata, Gitzo, Lastolite, Formatt Filters and National Geogrraphic). Bogen has donated everything from raingear to tripods, heads, stands and filters to LED lighting to equipment bags. Zylight, a leader in professional LED lighting instruments, provided a new model of large LED lighting that is not yet available for public use. Cedanna plans to blog about the trip, pending Internet access. He will be featured on Bogen Imaging’s educational website Bogen Café and on SunDevilProductions.com.

The site at Pinnacle Point near Mossel Bay has been a rich source for archaeologists in recent years due to the discovery of bone tools in the area’s cramped, beachside caves. Also found there has been evidence of artistic expression among early cave dwellers, which has in turn raised debates over the development of modern human behavior. It is in this area that the IHO team hopes to make their contribution to the world’s understanding of early man.

Cedanna will return the first week of July. Check out SunDevilProductions for future insights and blogs.
